Review of ‘Dark Beginnings’ by Mary Martel

***Drum roll*** I am back bookies!!! I cannot tell you how excited I am to finally have the time to be able to review books again! I am especially excited to share this particular book with you today so without further delay – let’s get this started!

As you all may have noticed by now, I love all types of genres – fantasy, YA, contemporary, horror – you name it! Chances are I’ll read it. With that said, Dark Beginnings is a novella that is, without a doubt, intended for an adult audience. It is a prequel to The Dollhouse Series.

If you have had the pleasure of reading that series and would love to know how the main characters, Duchess and Franky, came to know each other then I highly recommend reading it. It’s not necessary to read the novella before or after you’ve read the other books. However, it would provide some insight into the things that they do later on in the series.

This is not the type of series that is for readers who are sensitive or anti-cussing/anti-violence/anti-sex, etc. There will be all of the above and more so keep that in mind.

Okay, now that I have provided you all with the proper disclaimer I will go on ahead to tell you what I thought of this novella. Like the other two books in The Dollhouse series, I love seeing what new ideas Mary Martel has come up with. I think that is the main reason why I love her books. They are filled with original ideas. Key word: ORIGINAL. They are not a carbon copy of some other book that has risen to fame.

Now I am not dissing any other authors, but some tend to jump on the bandwagon instead of writing from their heart. Anyway, back to the novella…

First of all, I want to point out just how much I absolutely love the cover! Total cover porn right there guys!

The actual material is hard to read at times because of the overall theme which will cause one of two reactions – you’ll either want to cry or want to put your fist through the wall.

The series is about a girl nicknamed Duchess who has come from the wrong side of the tracks. She has had more than her share of bad experiences. She befriends a girl named Franky and the series revolves around an illegal business that they have made for themselves.

This novella details how they encountered one another and what it was that made them go down that path. It is dark and gritty and it will screw with your head! But I’m a total sicko so this was right up my alley!

You’re a haughty bitch. Cold.

Face an empty-mask like one of those paintings of an aristocrat

I’d imagine one would find in some dirty old castle.

A bitch who looks like a bitch

you’d never want to know.

Like a Duchess. Like you.

I gave this novella 5 stars because it captivated me from beginning to end. From the moment I opened it on my kindle I was hooked!

If I have not done a thorough job of convincing you to give this series a shot – the novella is only .99 cents right now!! Grab it while you can!!
