Review of “Civil Blood” by Mark Gelineau and Joe King

One city. Two worlds.

The King of Aedaron reigns in splendor, while far below, in the streets and alleys of the underworld, a different kind of king emerges.

Alys and Dax have always been caught in the middle. Once they fought for love, and their worlds tore them apart. But now as they are forced back together, they must choose whether to fight once again.

But for what? And against whom?

In the world of Lowside, nothing is as it seems.

Even each other.

This is the second addition in the series Best Left in the Shadows. I was just as captivated by Civil Blood as I was for all of the other Echoes of the Ascended books. For those of you who are not familiar with these books, Best Left in the Shadows is a series within another series called Echoes of the Ascended in which all of the books revolve around a group of orphans who were friends years ago, but have gone on to different paths.

Each cover for every segment of Echoes of the Ascended that I have seen so far has been a hit with me! They have all been absolutely stunning and this one is just as appealing! I love that I can finally put faces to these two amazing characters!

Alys is an assassin who resides in Lowside and has formed a close yet questionable relationship with Pious Black,  a crime boss who is widely feared and respected among other criminal counterparts. Dax is a noble justicar who is trying to find his place among the people of Lowside. It isn’t a simple task considering the fact that he is a nobleman with direct lineage to the king and stands out like a sore thumb.

We travel with Alys and Daxton into Lowside, an area deep into the criminal underground that is notorious for containing the darkest of deeds and dirtiest of secrets.

Alys seeks Dalton’s assistance after she is falsely accused of a crime that she did not commit and sets out to find the person responsible for framing her. Their search uncovers secrets that have been hidden for years and it becomes even more difficult to know who to trust as their search for answers leads them to a location that even the average criminals in Lowside fear to traverse.

I was definitely not prepared for the twists that I encountered in this story! There is so much information that our characters have yet to know and once they do I don’t know how they’re going to react or how it will shape their future relationship. I look forward to seeing how their story continues to play out!

Final Verdict:

Overall, I really enjoyed Civil Blood! I’m very curious as to what Lowside holds next for Alys and Daxton.

5 out of 5 stars!!
